  3. Board Of Regents Elects David Steiner Commissioner Of Education

    The New York State Board of Regents voted today to elect Dr. David Milton Steiner as New York State Education Commissioner and President of the University of the State of New York.   The Regents took this action at their July meeting held today in Buffalo.

    Currently the Dean of the Hunter College School of Education at the City University of New York, Dr. Steiner is best known for his leadership of the national effort to transform teacher preparation and improve teacher quality.

  17. 532 Schools And 35 Districts Statewide Identified For Improvement;

    A total of 532 elementary, middle and high schools and 35 districts statewide have been identified for improvement under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Of these, 99 schools and 4 districts were newly identified this year.  Of the identified schools, 483 will receive Title I funds in 2010-11 and are required to offer extra help to eligible low-income students; 373 of these Title I schools must also offer public school choice (as appropriate) to all enrolled students.

    The New York State Museum (NYSM) is pleased to celebrate the success of its collaboration with the City of Albany’s LIGHT Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and Girls Inc.   26. 1325 Schools And 123 Districts Statewide Identified For Improvement;

    A total of 1325 elementary, middle and high schools and 123 districts statewide have been identified for improvement under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.  Of the identified schools, 1173 will receive Title I funds in 2011-12 and are required to offer extra help to eligible low-income students; 416 of these Title I schools must also offer public school choice (as appropriate) to all enrolled students.

    The State Education Department today named the fourth class of My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Fellows who have been identified as leaders in their MBK Communities and who will be provided with mentor relationship opportunities in government, education and business, Commissioner Betty A.   30. State Museum, Library and Archives Celebrate New York State History Month in November

    The New York State Museum, State Library, and State Archives will celebrate New York State History Month in November with a variety of free public programs for children, families and adults. In addition, a model of the first statue in New York City’s Central Park that honors and depicts women will be on display in the State Museum’s West Corridor beginning Tuesday, November 6. Two temporary exhibitions exploring New York’s history will be open at the State Museum in November: Enterprising Waters: New York’s Erie Canal; and The Historic Woodstock Art Colony: The Arthur A.
