The New York State Education Department submitted a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) to address equity issues in the state’s accountability system because of the pandemic, State Education Commissioner Betty A. Sanford, Chancellor Joseph McGovern, Regent Emeritus Emlyn Griffith and Regent Margaret Snow Vander Veer Scholarships as well as New York’s 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program finalists at its June meeting. The Regents also honored two educators, the Regent Emeritus Louis E. Yavner Awardee, a teacher honored for contributions to teaching about the Holocaust and human rights, and the 2020 Superintendent of the Year.

Governor David A. Paterson and Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch today announced a $6 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the State Education Department to establish a network of early college high schools throughout New York. The "Smart Scholars" Early College High School (ECHS) program will help groups of students who have traditionally had low rates of college enrollment and completion.

Board of Regents Accepts Two Grants for Education Department Priorities
The New York State Board of Regents today accepted grants from the JPMorgan Chase and the New York Community Trust. The $200,000 grant from JPMorgan will support the Department’s effort to grow high-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, particularly in parts of the State where few programs currently exist. The $160,000 grant from the New York Community Trust will allow the Department to develop resources and trainings for districts to help them adopt culturally responsive pedagogy and practices.
