King, Jr. today announced the State Education Department (SED) is accepting applications for a second round of the competitive Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (STLE) grant program. STLE grants are targeted to support school districts and charter schools utilizing, as part of their implementation of an Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) plan, a comprehensive approach to recruitment, development, support, retention and equitable distribution of effective teachers and school leaders.

State Education Department Launches Virtual Learning Initiative
State Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. today announced 17 school districts and local consortia of districts have been awarded grants under New York State’s virtual learning initiative, the Virtual Advanced Placement (VAP) Program. VAP is targeted to improve access to online and blended Advanced Placement (AP) courses for low-income students. King said the program is part of the Board of Regents’ strategy to ensure that all New York students graduate from high school ready for college and careers.

New York State Education Department Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced today the appointment of Dr. Mark Potter to serve as fiscal consultant for the Rochester City School District effective January 1, 2024. Dr. Potter assumes the position that Jaime Alicea vacated when the Commissioner appointed him to become monitor of the district. Board of Regents Adopts New Professional Standards for Educational Leaders
The Board of Regents took action today to improve principal preparation and practice in New York by adopting the 2015 Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSELs). The 2015 PSELs are the most current national standards for educational leaders and will replace New York’s current standards, the 2008 Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards. Adoption of the 2015 PSELs is part of the State Education Department’s larger effort to improve principal development and support as part of the Principal Preparation Project.

New York State Education Department Submits Application for U.S. Department of Education Rethink Education Models
The New York State Education Department today submitted its application to the U.S. Department of Education requesting $19.9 million in the Rethink K-12 Education Models grant competition to develop and launch the Teaching in Blended/Remote Learning Environments (TRLE) program. New York’s TRLE program would address the immediate and urgent learning needs of New York’s most vulnerable students and their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing educators with the tools, resources, and training to facilitate blended/remote instruction when needed.
