    The New York State Archives awarded $5.6 million in grants to help manage and preserve local records, State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced. More than $5.5 million will be distributed through Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund (LGRMIF) grants to over 100 local governments, government agencies and school districts across the state to help improve records management systems to better serve the public.

    State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia today appointed Dr. Denise Lowe as a State Monitor for the East Ramapo Central School District. Dr. Lowe will coordinate efforts with Mr. Charles Szuberla, a State Monitor in the District since August 2016, to propose actions for improvement to ensure students have access to high-quality instruction, programs and services and oversee District operations.

  4. State Education Department Names 2017 Better Beginnings Award Recipient And McGovern Scholarship Awardees

    The State Education Department named John Bailey, a music and band teacher in the Lyndonville Central School District, the 2017 recipient of the Better Beginnings Award, Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced today. The award celebrates the life and career of Helen Bach Moss, a young New York State educator who passed away in 1988. The Department also announced that Raphael Cohen of the Albany City School District and Ryan Nolan of the Averill Park Central School District have been awarded the Chancellor Joseph W. McGovern Scholarship.

  6. Board of Regents Recognizes Two Students Receiving Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarships

    The Board of Regents today recognized two outstanding New York State students receiving Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarships at the Board’s April meeting, Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced. The scholarship is named for Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford, the first African American, as well as the first woman, to serve as Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents. Through Dr. Sanford’s generosity, it is awarded annually to exceptional My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Fellows and graduating high school seniors from a NYSED-recognized MBK community.

  9. State Archives Partnership Trust Receives $100,000 Grant from the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation to Expand State Archives Educator Resources

    The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation awarded the New York State Archives Partnership Trust (APT), the non-profit arm of the New York State Archives, a $100,000 matching grant for Consider the Source Online: Teaching with Historical Records Project. The project will create an online platform that enables local, regional and statewide collaborations among teachers, cultural organizations and content specialists. In addition, the National Council for History Education designated the APT to head a new council for New York State.

    The State Education Department today announced a partnership with the College Board to help students identify and prepare for a postsecondary program that best fits their needs. Through this partnership, the Department will work with the College Board to expand student access to unique, personalized learning pathways, including free, Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.     The New York State Library awarded $226,450 in Conservation/Preservation Discretionary Grant Program grants to eight cultural education institutions to help preserve research materials, State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced today. The grants provide support for projects that contribute to the preservation of significant research materials in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies and other not-for-profit cultural organizations in New York. Projects include improving collection storage environments, or reformatting, treating or rehousing collections.
