Statement from Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr., the Board of Regents, and State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa on the Passing of Hazel Dukes
Hazel Dukes was a trailblazer whose lifelong dedication to civil rights and education transformed countless lives across New York State and beyond. Her staunch and unwavering advocacy for equity in education opened doors for generations of young people, especially in underserved communities. As we grieve her passing, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment — one where those she inspired must rise to carry forward her legacy. Now more than ever, we must stand up for the ideals she championed — fighting for justice, expanding opportunity, and ensuring every child has access to a quality education. Dr. Dukes taught us that real progress happens when we help others along the way, and it is our duty to continue advancing in her memory.
