Program Overview: 

The New York State Education Department (SED) is pleased to announce the SED Student Internship Program.  The program offers undergraduate and graduate students a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience in educational leadership, public policy and administration, government, management, and much more.

The New York State Education Department serves as the administrative arm of the Board of Regents and under the direction of the Commissioner, carries out legislative mandates and Regents policies. The Department plans, funds, monitors, and coordinates educational services from pre-kindergarten to graduate school for local school districts, non-public schools, colleges and universities, and other educational institutions. The Board of Regents and the Department also oversee 50 licensed professions, provide adult career and continuing education services, guide local government records programs, and operate the State Archives, Library, and Museum. The Department includes program offices in P-12 Education, Adult Career and Continuing Education, Cultural Education, Higher Education, Professions, Management Services, and the Chief Financial Officer.

Assignments: 

Students may choose from an array of Current Assignments.  Unless otherwise indicated, assignments are available to both undergraduate and graduate students.  All internships are on-site at an SED location.

Qualifications: 

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and currently matriculated in a degree program at a college or university.   

Program Term: 

All internships are part-time and students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the semester.

Application Process and Requirements: 
  1. Review the list of Current Assignments and select your top choice(s);
  2. Complete the Student Internship Application You will not be considered for an assignment without a completed application;
  3. Submit a copy of your current resume;
  4. Submit a copy of your current college transcript(s).  (A legible student copy is acceptable);
  5. E-mail all documents listed above to Internships@nysed.gov  

Important:  You must include the assignment number in the subject line of your email to receive consideration.  If applying for more than one internship, you must send a separate email and application for each with the appropriate assignment number indicated in the subject line.

The SED Student Internship Program is unpaid.  However, students may be allowed to pursue an internship for academic credit.  In such case, students are advised to consult with their school to ensure that a credit-based experience in their chosen assignment can be an acceptable part of their degree program.  It is incumbent upon the student to coordinate any administrative requirements necessary to fulfill a credit bearing internship assignment.
