New York State Education Department (NYSED) Accepting Public Comment for a Double Testing Waiver Extension Request to the United States Department of Education (USDE) for the 2025-26 School Year
- NYSED is accepting public comment on a waiver extension request to USDE for four additional years beginning in the 2025-26 school year.
- The waiver extension would allow grades 6 and 7 math students who are taking the Regents Examination in math to be exempt from taking the grades 6 and 7 math exams and grades 7 and 8 students who are taking the Regents Examination in science to be exempt from taking the grade 8 science exam, which would eliminate the need to double test students. This waiver request is an expansion of the ESSA statute, which permits grade 8 students to take advanced math assessments in lieu of the grade 8 math assessment.
- The Regents Examination scores will be used to calculate accountability measures for the middle school level under the State-approved accountability system.
- The public comment online submission form will be posted on NYSED’s ESSA Assessment and Accountability Waiver webpage beginning Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
- Public comments will be accepted until Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EST.
- Questions may be directed to essacomments@nysed.gov.
