Office/Bureau Description: 

The New York State Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL) lends audio and braille books and magazines to eligible residents of upstate New York who have a qualifying print disability.  Currently, over 14 individual New Yorkers of all ages are registered for and receive Talking Book services. TBBL also serves over 3,000 institutional members, including schools, hospitals, nursing and adult care homes, correctional facilities and libraries.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

The student intern works directly with TBBL circulation staff in the daily processing of the large digital audio book and braille collections in our circulation area, over 7,000 books per week. The intern uses the library database software to add new book inventory to the collection. The intern also works with the daily pulling of books from the shelves for checkout and the checking in of returning books. The intern also works with the TBBL reference librarians in writing documentation of internal procedures and in writing posts for the library Facebook page.

Intern Development Plan : 

This position provides excellent hand on professional experience with all aspects of the workings of a public library serving a very large population of library members. The intern learns to work with professional librarians in managing the general operation of the library. The intern learns how to use our library automation system relational database software in the course of managing all types of library circulation issues.  The intern learns to solve problems, learns to innovate, and learns how to use a rather complicated database to make library circulation as efficent as possible.
