Anthropology Collections Archival Internship

Program Office/Description: 

The Anthropology Collections of the New York State Museum include both archaeological and ethnological artifacts, together with the associated documentation that provides their contexts. With some 4 million artifacts representing over a century and a half of research, the NYSM curates the most complete series of scientifically excavated archaeological collections from New York State in existence. These materials document the 13,000-year history of human life in the region, including comprehensive collections from thousands of Native American sites, the most complete archaeological record of Dutch settlers in New Netherland, and important collections documenting 17th-to-20th-century commerce, industry, and urban and rural domestic life.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

We are seeking a motivated graduate student majoring in Library Science or related field of study to assist with the organization and inventory of our archaeological collections documentation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply their skills and education in preserving and managing historical records. Responsibilities include:

  • Organize and catalog archaeological collection records, including site reports, field notes, photographs, and maps.
  • Conduct an inventory of collection records to ensure accurate documentation and proper storage.
  • Identify fragile or at-risk records that may require digitization for preservation.
  • Work with the team to implement and maintain best practices for archival preservation.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to meet and perform informational interviews with OCE archivists.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

Qualified candidates will be enrolled as graduate students majoring in Library Science or a related field. They will have knowledge of archival practices and preservation methods, Strong attention to detail and organizational skills., and be able to work independently and as part of a team. Familiarity with Microsoft Office is required.

Schedule/Hours: 

Work hours/days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 am to 4 pm, maximum of 29 hours per week.
