Program Office/Description: 

The Office of Professions is engaged in a program modernization project to convert mainframe applications from an antiquated mainframe application to a modern stand alone application that will support New York State Education resources that perform Licensure and Permit requests for 55 professions. The project team is creating a New Professions System (NPS). The team is supporting the development of a discipline Case Tracking application (referred to as DICE). This is a vendor managed application that will track applicants who have had complaints made against them that will hinder their license/permit renewal. 

The Scope of responsibilities range the entire length of an application development process. The team contains:

  • Project Management resources that plan and monitor NPS and DICE projects.
  • Business Analysts group that captures requirements from the Office of Professions business partners and creates documentation that will be used to develop the application solution.
  • Application Development team that designs and build the application based on the best technical software practices and tools available and the requirements documents.
  • Quality Assurance team that validates what has been developed against the requirements documents that were captured.
The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Drupal is an open source content management system, allowing users to create and publish content. Developers at the Office of the Professions (OP) have used it to build our website, https://www.op.nysed.gov/.

The intern will be assisting the Drupal Team with the following activities:

  • Monitoring the OP website for bugs and glitches.
  • Monitoring Google Analytics for user activity.
  • Utilizing tools such as Siteimprove and Google Console to monitor website security.
  • Assisting website users with various requests.
  • Analyzing IP addresses for bots/abusive activity, and creating related reports.
  • Updating the backend and frontend of Drupal.
  • Ensuring Enforcement Action data and Waiver data are updated regularly.
  • Assisting with various reports and documentation.
  • Supporting the Drupal Team with various assignments.
  • Additional assignments, as needed.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working in the backend and frontend of a website, preferably Drupal
  • Be working toward a Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Science, Web Development, or a related field.
  • Have experience coding in HTML.
  • Have MS Office skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Have experience with a website analytics tool, such as Google Analytics.
  • Be detail-oriented. 
  • Be able to learn a new program fast (we use various programs and tools such as Siteimprove / Jira / Google Analytics / Google Console / Confluence / Drupal / Acquia Cloud / SharePoint / Teams / Adobe Acrobat / Outlook).
  • Have Customer Service Experience (polite, responsive, courteous, helpful).
Schedule/Hours: 

Hours will be between 8:30a-4:30p, Monday through Friday, maximum of 29 hours per week.
