The Education Department manages the distribution of over $26 billion in aid to localities throughout New York. Institutions receiving support through the Department include over 7,000 public and private elementary and secondary schools, 270 public and independent colleges and universities, 359 proprietary (for-profit) schools, nearly 7,000 libraries; 750 museums, the State schools for the blind and for the deaf, and 25 public broadcasting facilities.
